How To - Network

It's not my intention to tell people how to suck eggs but I was very surprised in the number of people who did not know how to network or why.

Put aside the details of what your business is about.  Whether that may be a stand alone business or if you're an affiliate marketer.  However, can we agree you are in the business of making money?

Readers need to know the year is 2014 because it's relevant.  Technology is everywhere and it's here to stay.  Sadly, the criminal element is siphoning huge sums of money from peoples bank accounts has made us all very cautious about who we do online business with.

 The above is one reason why many home business folks do not trust or engage in online business relationships.  Another reason is some people don't know how to establish these relationships.  More importantly, many folks don't think it's necessary.

Let me talk about the list (not how to build one).  Your list of names and email addresses are comprised of people who believe you are going to provide them with some form of value.  Something / someone has convinced these listed people to give you their details.  Furthermore, the value you are going to provide is exactly what your listed people need and are keen to receive from you.

In addition to that, your list of people must think you're an OK kinda person, they have some degree of trust in you.  You have obviously impressed these folks with your previous promotional material.  Perhaps you came across well in your video or slide show about your offering.  BUT wait, what's that you say!!!

NO list...you don't have a list!  At least the above two paras will give you a clue what you need to do to get a list.  Moving on....

Some people have a strange idea about networking.  They will join a few social media sites, fill in their bio and stick a pic of themselves or an irrelevant ghastly looking avatar on there and tell people how good they are.  They then post low value information and wonder why they are ignored.  I admit this is worse case but it happens.

To avoid my ramblings and a lengthy post, networking is about 'joining in'.  Subscribing to groups that you relate to.  Learn from others.  Take and offer advice or suggestions.   Respond to other people's posts, make constructive comment and invite remarks.  Yes, this will be an imposition for many of you and also will place you on the edge of your comfort zone.

I will tell you something I discovered.  By doing the above, I quickly realised I had more knowledge than many others and so my following grew.  This was a light bulb moment for me because I was networking, many of the folks that followed me knew about me via word-of-mouth.

In summary, networking is not plastering your posts on a social media site.  It's about getting involved and connecting with other people.  Seek out others in groups such as Google + or Face Book groups.  Forget about YOU for a while, get out there and introduce yourself to others.  Just like you would do at a party or business conference.

Networking - A Problem

Sometimes I get the feeling that people who work from home online have no clue what networking is about.

Networking has been around long before the internet and is an integral part of business.  Making contacts and connections, meeting people, attending seminars and functions and simply getting out and about was and still is a key to running a successful business. Back in the day, networking actually involved conversing with a real person either face to face or by phone.

These days of course and thanks to the internet, networking has a much broader application.  How many social media sight exist?  Webinars, hangouts, video, mobiles and VOIP are just some of the methods used to communicate with people or businesses.

Somewhere between the pre-internet era and current day, way too many people forgot how to or do not know how to network.  People call themselves 'network marketers' and that's just not true. It's not a lie but so many folks just don't know what it is to network, and by putting 'marketing' after the word network doesn't change that.

Another thing people don't know is 'networking' is crucial to developing a successful online business.  Specifically, I am talking about those people who have setup a home office and are trying to make a dollar using the internet.  Apart from the fact 95 percent of these people don't know what they're doing, not having a clue about networking just makes reaching their online aspirations so much more difficult.  Let me explain what I mean. People decide to make a start building an online business from their home and after a while they figure out it's tough going.  Some will quit with few kind words to say about their experience while others persevere.

Those folks that stick around Google ways that can help them create wealth.  At this point they discover those shiny objects, dozens of ways to spend their money in the hope that other people and their companies will make them rich.  This usually involves subscribing to monthly sites that provide "how to" content.  Some people pay yearly membership fees for the same thing.  I'm not knocking these methods of creating wealth but they only work for a lucky few.  Actually, paying others to create your wealth rarely works, period.  An individual needs to create their own wealth but that's another story.

Here's the thing.  It does not matter what you do, if you are not networking you are doing it hard.  Here's the obvious;  the average person who works from home online wants to make money, a lot of money.  This money has to come from other people's pockets.  These 'other people' decide to give you their money in return for something of value.  With me so far!  Next question is, does your product have any competition?  Are you selling something that can be found anywhere and everywhere?

The majority of people trying to make a dollar online are all using similar methods to do so.  At this point I refer you to an earlier post you would be interested in reading.  There is a better way, however, let's keep with this most common model.  Now we get into the "list".  It's a fact that the best way to build success is through a well developed list of followers.  Most people do not have a list of people / prospects / buyers that will help them with their wealth creation.  WHY?  Because they don't know how to network and if you can't network, you can't network market.  I hope this makes sense to you!

In my opinion, networking is one of those key foundation blocks everyone needs to build their business on.  So, here we have identified a problem that hinders many people's business progress and sadly, they are totally unaware of it.  Don't worry, all is not lost.  Over the next few posts I will provide insights into the world of networking.  I will give you what you need to develop one of those key foundation blocks to build your business on.

What's Your Experience

This post is more about resonating with readers than how to increase your value to the online world.

A short while ago I noticed a friend of mine had an advert on Facebook.  I was surprised because I had no clue he even used Facebook.  I eventually caught up with him over coffee as we often did and I asked him about his social media exploits.
It turns out he is embarrassed to tell friends and family what he is doing online.  He is of the belief he will be laughed at or worse case maybe ridiculed.  I can understand that because I used to feel the same way many years ago.  We had quite a conversation about his online activities and his story was so familiar.

There is a common theme here and maybe you can relate to this.  Too often when we tell our friends that we have an online business of some sort, there is usually an underlying hope they will take an interest and want to know more.  More so than not, this doesn't happen.  To add to this, the opposite occurs.  It seems we get a negative reaction when matters concerning making money online is mentioned.
Therefore the easiest path to take is not to say anything.  Funny thing is, my friend had no idea I worked online too.  There is another demon lurking in the shadows here too.  There is a silent fear that failure will triumph and that holds many of us back.

Let me explain using my friends words.  He can think of nothing worse than promoting his online business to his friends who then tell him they're not interested.  Worse than that, over time if this online business doesn't work out and fails to produce the desired results, his friends may feel vindicated.  His friends might look down at him and say, "I told you this wouldn't work."  It would be so embarrassing.

From a statistics point of view, over 90 percent of online start-ups do fail.  There are numerous reasons for this failure and often they are to do with the business owner, not the biz model.  That is beside the point of this post, the fear exists.  Fears are huge road blocks and often we dismiss them as being minor obstacles. This of course is a wrong because fears manifest themselves in ways we can't imagine and that's a course in psychology I'm not going into now.

So, is there a point to this post!  Yes, but it's subtle.  I want to create for everyone a self-awareness that fears of any kind are a negative force.  Most of us are aware of them but dismiss them as harmless.  We must tackle fears head on, do what is uncomfortable until it becomes comfortable.  It's about making change.

Not only change, is about growing, moving forward and never looking back.  Everyone, including you can overcome all fears regardless of what they are.  It will amaze you by what doors will open as you grow and move forward. Setbacks and fears are part of life but hey need not be permanent, it's up to you.

Thankfully, my friend has a fresh perspective about his online business and his old fear of telling his friends about what he does.  In fact he doesn't shout it out to everyone he knows, rather, he tells them if they ask. Before he would say nothing but that fear has now been conquered.

I do hope many of you can relate to what I have written and it's been of value in some way.

Is Success Achievable

Is success achievable?

Interesting question because it depends on the subject.  Yes I know, we're talking about success working online from home.  However, there are many different levels of success, how do you define success!
How would you like to make $30K every month or how would you like to make $5k every month. Actually, would an extra $500 a month be good for you?  As you can see, success can be measured in many different ways.  Interestingly, this does lead to a great way to start a business.

It's simple.  So many people dream of making multiple 6 figures a year when they start out in their home based business.  For those folks who are still in the game after 6 months, their expectations are lowered and for good reason.  Achieving initial success for the majority never happens.
For example, I know many people who started out dreaming of making millions per year.  To their credit they are still hard at it after 12 months but now, they get excited when they make a $20 sale.  Their hope and dreams have all but vanished but still they persevere.   Good on them!

Bottom line, success is achievable but that is totally the wrong question to ask.  Anyone who asks if they can be successful at making money on the internet is showing their inexperience.  The answer is yes and always will be yes.  This is why so many internet companies are in business, because they sell the hope that success is very possible.

 When was the last time you saw a promotion that guarantees you can make $500 a year?  Never!  This would be the worlds worst promotion  because most people want to make $thousands a year, not just a measly $500.  Point is it doesn't matter because as soon as anyone make a few dollars, they have been successful.

If you start out with a goal of making $100k per year and you deliberately were not going to celebrate "success" until you reached that goal, that not only would be more business minded but sadly 95 percent of people who set this goal will fail.

So, what is the point of this post!  I want to ensure people who read this post and are trying to make good money online they have a tough road ahead.  Only a few percent of folks ever make the "rich" status and that's mostly because they don't know what they're doing.

Success is achievable so long as you are happy with small success.  By all means, aim for the stars, but you will have to be content with hitting a tree!  Many will not like what I have to say, many will know I speak facts.  However, not all is lost.

Very good money and I'm talking $10k per month is very possible.  I'm not going to sell you anything here, I just want you to know it's possible.  BUT, there's a catch.  If you want to achieve these kind of results you need to get educated or qualified.  There are no shortcuts and you cannot pay anyone to do it for you.

Slipping Through the Cracks.

Hello and thanks for reading.  This is a simple little post and it's about re-directing.

I keep receiving notification that people are following my blog here at NEWBIE when in fact I stopped posting here way back in 2013.  So many things in the online business arena have happened and many a steep learning curve have been conquered.

So, for those of you that have slipped through the cracks and are no longer following or are subscribed to my current blog, here is a link to it:  Steve's Blog  I have started a self hosting blog using wordpress and I still offer valuable content for people who want to start an online business or for folks who have a biz opp but are struggling to make it work.

A bit about my new blog site.  I am having a challenge selecting a theme, I think I'm onto my third theme but I am not totally happy with it, therefore I am on the hunt for another one.  So, you might see some changes over time as I experiment and that's normal for me, always experimenting.

Lastly, 2014 is planned out as a big year for biz opp and for learning how to make money online, the correct and long term way.  I am about to publish a hard hitting letter which I will probably entitle "MLM - A Personal Perspective".  This is a no holds barred report totally based around my experiences and some experiences I have gained by from the ultra successful marketers on the internet.  It will be a free report to my subscribers and I can assure you it will open some eyes or better yet, it will confirm what a lot of people think but have never been able to conform through an independent source such as me.

Saturday and the Polls are running red hot!

What a day!  In Australia today there is a Federal Election underway.  It's the voting public's opportunity to keep the existing Prime Minister or turf him out and stick another bloke and his merry men in power.  Damn scary stuff, not to mention it costs a zillion dollars to hold an election.

That's enough rambling for now.  I had a terrific bike ride today and compulsory cappuccino along the way.  We are a few days into spring here and the sun is doing its hardest to shine.  I also cleaned out the pond so Horatio (turtle) had a clean start after his winter hibernation.  He's a funny chap, he likes to leap from the top of the pond into the water, except today I had drained the water-good thing he has a hard shell!

I also submitted an ad to Australia's leading job site.  It will run for 30 days once it's approved.  Nothing is easy but I can understand why these companies need to scrutinise the ads due to scams and spamming and alike.  There's also a number of sites to advertise on for free.

We're back on track.

A good friend of mine who is a commercial pilot and has been accepted into the RAAF hopefully to fly fast jets, made a good suggestion.  I told him I had lost sound to my PC, immediately he came back and told me to update my drivers.  DOH!  Of course, why didn't I think of that and now it's all back on track.  Thanks Sam.

Back to work!  The thing I love about this business I'm establishing is there's no cold calling, no party plans or meetings to attend.  I don't have to harass all my friends  or produce a big list of people I know who I can call to tell them about this great opportunity.  Funny thing though.... Some of my friends ask me what I'm doing these days and I tell them I'm working from home, that's all I tell them, so they want to know more.
Because this company provides totally state-of-the-art business systems, I ask their permission to send them an email which explains everything.  Then I plug them into the system and they are automatically introduced to what I do.

I Hate Being Filmed!

This has been a very stressful day.  I am the one who created the stress too, how silly is that!  What's the fuss about?  Well I'm glad you asked.  As part of growing my business and moving forward, I have heard from many sources that I need to make a video.  For those people that know me they would say it's never going to happen!  Well, in their ear I say.  It took me hundreds of attempts or "takes" for those in the movie business but I finally made it.  It's actually quite awful but I sort of say what I wanted to without mumbling too much.

Yeah, that was 4 hours to make a two minute video.  To top it off, as I started to edit it my sound card in my PC bit the dust.  I guess these are those things which are sent to test us and our commitment.  I can hear ya, you are just dying to see this video, well it's on YouTube at this location:  My First Promo  Feel free to comment, I need to learn what to change.

I don't have much more to add today, I'm rather worn out.  I might go and walk the dog on the beach.  He could do with the exercise as much as I do.  Never fear, I will be back to sign autographs!!

Networking.

Young Billy is 12 years old and hasn't got many friends, he's just started at a new school.  Billy feels quite alone, particularly on the weekends.  His dad is always away and his mum works full time doing shift work.  Good thing he has all the newest games on the market.  Still, being the only child it gets boring.  One day he came up with a plan to resolve his boredom, he overheard a conversation his dad was having and thought he could adapt what he is doing.

During the next school day he had a chat to one of the few friends he had made.  He asked Johnny to come to his place on Saturday to play with some of his toys.  He didn't specify what type of toys.  He also told Johnny to invite 6 friends.  Anyway, next Saturday came came around and Johnny arrived along with 3 friends.  They had so much fun with all of Billy's gadgetry they asked if they could come back next weekend.  Of course was Billy's reply and he suggested each of them bring a friend.

Can you see where this is going?  Networking at its primitive best!
We network often in our daily lives, one way or another.  It's weird though, as soon as you mention network marketing to someone, they usually run for the hills.  Networking theory is often applied to a business as a way to move products and or services.  One person can leverage his time and have them duplicate what he is doing in return for a payment, usually a commission from sales.

Trouble is it's happening everywhere.  So many of these schemes disappear overnight along with your money, some of them are terrific but take years to provide a good return.  I have been involved in a couple of them but eventually I gave up because it was too hard.  Fortunately these failures didn't cost me too much money but I did lose a lot of time.

All you have to do is google "online business opportunity" for example, and look at what you get.  So many businesses offering the best opportunity since sliced bread!  My business is right there among them all, competing for your attention and hopefully your interest.  Fortunately,  the product I have is first class and much sought after but, the compensation plan not only is very lucrative, it is also quite unique.  This is all thanks to the vision of the founder and president of the company.

Alas, the time has slipped away once again.  I will continue tomorrow where I left off.  Until then - may all your chickens come home to roost!

Father's Day here in Oz

Sunday, first day of spring and it's also Fathers Day.  I got some fabo chocolate from my wife, it's no ordinary chocolate, it's from Haigh's Chocolate Haigh's Chocolate and it's yummo.

Anyway, this morning I have been back inside my Adwords campaign tweaking keywords to make it more efficient.  It's not easy so I am considering using a company to handle it for me.  I have done some research and I will contact an Aussie business to see what's involved.  FYI: Lead Generation  It will be money worth spent if it works.  Will it work?  That's the wait n see question.  Actually, there's not much to lose.  There's no contracts and I can stop it at anytime.  There's a guarantee of success and it wont cost me any more than I'm spending now.  It would be such a burden off my shoulders too.

I have been toying with this YouTube concept too.  It means I put my Canon camera on a tripod, point it at myself sitting somewhere and talking to the audience about.......something!  It's WIP just now.
Then comes another challenge, who will see this and how do I get the right audience to see it??  Good thing I love a challenge!  Anyway, more on that in future posts as it comes to fruition.

Because it's Fathers Day, I'm taking my father-in-law and my wife out shopping and to lunch-wooopeeee.... Just kidding, it will be ok, but that means I have to get a move along NOW.  I will be back tomorrow and post some more about what I am doing or have done.

Bedtime, but first...

I just wanted to post a pic or two of today's events, my 29er bike and Deep Blue Cafe plus others from Moana Beach here in South Australia.  I'll be back!

It is Saturday Morning and....

It is Saturday Morning and the sun is shining and not a cloud to be seen woohooo.  It's a day to get the 29er out.  What's a 29er you might be thinking?  It's my new 29 inch deadly treadly(cycle).

I thought I would post this as spring shoves winter to one side! Why? because I can and I'm excited.  Of course the ride this morning will take in a cappuccino from Deep Blue Cafe', it's located next to Moana Beach, I will take some happy snaps and post them in the next post.

Meanwhile, I am still trying to find an advertising agency who I can use to advertise my business nationally (Australia) with a view to expanding globally over time.  I also need to place a descent ad, not just a wee text ad.  Finding this ad agency is proving a challenge.

Oh, it's Fathers Day tomorrow, I wonder what I will get!  It would be a big surprise if I got nothing..

Last of all for now, I am venturing into YouTube. Yes that's right, I am going to be a star.  I hate being in front of the camera but no-one can say I don't give things a go.

Comparing Others.

I listened in to a webinar last night and it was about comparing my business to other businesses, particularly comparing to multi level marketing businesses.  This is a link to that recorded webinar:
Compare Webinar  I am not going to discuss comparisons here, rather, I will talk about the rank and commission structure of my business.  Keep in mind, whenever I use the term 'my business' or 'my company', it also means anyone who is involved, that could mean you.

There are only two ranks in my business.

1. Associate - 25% commissions
2. Manager - 50% commissions

Everyone starts off as an associate, me included.  When I/you make three sales - That is to say you introduce three people to your business - you automatically get promoted to Manager status.  This is permanent, you can't be demoted, ever.  Needless to say the first goal is to make three sales.  This leads me onto commissions. Firstly though it would be appropriate to mention joining costs, because it ties in with commissions.

There are three levels at which you can join:

1. Executive Level  $1995 USD 3 year term
2. VIP Level  $3995 USD  10 year term
3. Elite Life Manager  $9995 USD  99 year term

There are only two commission scales.  You will receive 25% comms based on what level you joined at.  For example 1:  If you joined at VIP and introduced a person who joined at Elite Life, you will get 25% of your VIP level $3995 = $999

Example 2:  If you joined at VIP level, had made three sales so you were a manager, then introduced your fourth person who joined at Elite Life, you get 50% of your VIP level = $1998

There are also in depth residual payments, a great way to leverage your business, too complex to discuss here.  If you want to know more you can always contact me through my web site.

Note:  If you join at VIP or Executive, you can always at anytime pay the difference and move up to Elite Life.  That's the goal.

Unbelievable!

I don't get the weather.  Sunny one day, awful the next.  It was 24 degrees C yesterday, I was in shorts and a T, first time since May this year.  Today it's blowing a gale, wet and miserable and about 17 degrees outside.  Yesterday our turtle came out of  hibernation and was in the pond.  Today I'm sure he is cranky and he has gone back into his hiding spot.

There's a favorite cafe I sometimes go to called Gloria Jeans at  Gloria Jeans on Facebook  located within the Colonnades shopping centre at Colonnades on Facebook.  I have developed a taste for coffee and I don't mind saying I'm quite a connoisseur (Thank heavens for spell check!).

I have just sat down to do some work at 5pm!  I have done most of the foot slog (work) required in setting up my business, now I can let the systems kick in and do their thing.  I will monitor for a few days before I start tweaking if required.

I'm also making a few friends on Facebook which is really nice, I was very hesitant at first.  Twitter also is going well, I can't say I'm setting the world on fire but small steps is my motto.  I have set a task for tomorrow and that is learn about YouTube.  I also need to learn how to convert my videos to YouTube format and tweak them so they are acceptable for upload.  I tried to upload a turtle video but it wont work with MP 4.  Ratz!

Yeah I know, I'm waffling on like an ole' chook!  I am cooking tonight so I will trot off in a sec and get started.  Tomorrow I will report in as usual and update events, perhaps a weather report too.

Taking some time

Sometimes it's a good idea to take a break, get some fresh air and regroup.  Today's weather is fabulous and I need to get out there, also need to take the father-in-law to the doctor.  Of course there is the obligatory cappuccino after the doc and perhaps some lunch to go with it.  I'm thinking a salad roll, I might have ham with it too!

I've mentioned this before, the place we gravitate to is Becks Cafe at Port Noarlunga.  If that  doesn't take our fancy, we go to Cafe Blue at Moana Beach.

I can't sign off today without mentioning a new web page I am working on at My WIP Page  it's just another page to direct folks to my business page.  Lastly, my business is progressing nicely and pretty much on track.  One thing for sure, I am gaining a whole lot of experience in marketing my own business.  It will be quite valuable to pass on to those who join me in my business.

My focus is mentoring

Sometimes I sit and wonder what I will post today, what will be of value to those reading this blog!  Strange thing is, I find after a while I am typing and without thought.  Then I find I have typed too much and I do some editing, oh well, today I know I will post about focus, what my aiming point is in the short term.

A friend told me many years ago not to focus on the result of my efforts, the money.  He said,"Help those around you that need help and offer help to those that don't know they need it".  I never paid much credence to that, in fact I probably dismissed it but I can't recall exactly my thoughts at the time.  It wasn't until recent times my friends words came back to me in a brilliant flash.  It came to me when I was reading about mentoring.  I made the connection immediately and this is what that connection is:

In my business, mentoring is very important.  It takes knowledge and focus to mentor.  Point is, mentoring is providing wisdom through teaching.  It is enabling someone to tackle tasks, decisions and the 'day to day' stuff with the right attitude with a smattering of the 'how to' knowledge through experience as well.  Mentoring is about providing direction, leadership and trust.  Mentoring does not focus on the reward, it must focus on the help and the guidance to get on and stay on the right path.  Continue and practice the philosophy of helping others that are struggling and those people on the sidelines will see your wisdom and want to follow to.
Success, however you deem success to be, will follow.  To focus on the end game is to focus on failure.  We all need a mentor to follow, a leader to aspire to.  Greatness is not by accident but by design.  You just need the right design.

Change of plans.

I did say I was going to write about what my business offers and the benefits open to you.  I have decided to keep that for another day.  Instead I am going to talk about what I have done thus far and results that have been achieved.

I have been 'Active' for two weeks, that is since I commenced advertising.  As mentioned prior, getting the right combination of 'free' ads and 'paid' ads is a challenge.  Then equally as challenging is the wording of the ad.  Using ads that require 'keywords' is also very interesting and I am constantly changing them.  I think I have found some level ground now that requires a few weeks of monitoring and tracking to see what works and what doesn't.

I have had prospective leads from the USA, New Zealand, India and Australia.  It shows I have reach but (there's always a but), the quality of those leads is poor.  I have tweaked some ads and redefined my target countries as well as made changes to who will see the ads.  An appropriate question might be, who do I want to see the ads?  Well, in an ideal world I would love people who are seriously looking to start their own home business online with a view to succeeding in the medium to long term.  Remember, there's no instant gratification here.  I have previously discussed attributes required and these combine to make for the ideal prospect.

I will say that every morning over the past fortnight I have checked my email and hoped to find a bunch of leads littering my inbox.  Not so lucky!  There have been the odd two or so but my mentor assures me when I find the correct advertising mix, that number of leads will rocket.  For interest, when people go to my webpage  My Web Page, among a host of information to read through, there is a wee form to fill in asking for First/Last name, email and phone number.  This provides the viewer with much more detail. Also, this plugs those folks into our system so they receive appropriate information about the company.  I see their number and will follow them up in a day or two to show the human face of the business.  This same system will work for you also.

That will do for today, I lost my focus a tad but the track is wide.
